Does Smoking Increase The Risk Of Coronavirus?

The Union Ministry for Information and Broadcasting said in a very recent tweet that the adverse effects of smoking will make people significantly more vulnerable to Coronavirus disease (Covid-19). They posted an infographic on Twitter pointing  out that smoking reduces lung capacity and leads to many diseases. Another thing mentioned in the infographic was that smoking with pipes and vapes can result in transmission of Covid-19 via hand to mouth along with increasing the chances of higher risk of viral pneumonia.

There has been lots of evidence on the link between smoking and Covid-19. Smoking significantly increases the risk that you will catch Covid-19 and smokers are more likely to have severe symptoms and have to go to the hospital instead of just home quarantine. A big reason for it is because smokers touch their face and mouth more making them become infected more easily. And we’re all aware that smoking damages the lungs, making smokers more vulnerable to severe illnesses from respiratory diseases, including Covid-19. The link between smoking and Covid-19 may not be direct but if you’re a smoker you’ll have a harder time recovering from the virus.

WHO has stated that smoking can lead to more severe illness and increased risk of death in hospitalised Covid-19 patients. The reason smoking is such a risk factor for Covid-19 is that smokers are more likely to develop chronic lung diseases and also cardiovascular disease, which makes them more likely to have the conditions associated with developing severe symptoms of Covid-19.

The effect of COVID-19 on the cardiovascular system can lead to pre-existing cardiovascular conditions getting worse. And, having a weaker cardiovascular system among COVID-19 patients who smoke can make such patients more at risk of developing severe symptoms, which may prove to be a fatal mistake. Smoking can also lead to an increased development of acute respiratory distress syndrome which is one of the main complications for severe cases of COVID-19.

The Covid 19 viral strain directly impacts the lungs. This reduces the capacity of the lungs and limits the intake of oxygen  leading to ARDS and pneumonia. Smoking can cause severe problems for people who have underlying illnesses, and respiratory complications.

In fact, even healthy people without any diabetes and hypertension can be more vulnerable to Covid 19 if they are smokers. As the respiratory tract, including lungs, gets directly exposed to the environment unlike other organs, it can get affected more easily. Smoking slowly destroys the immunity of the lungs and the respiratory system, which exposes the lungs to the many harmful things in the environment.

For smokers, their lungs are at high risk of catching the virus because they don’t have the defence to prevent its entry. Therefore we understand that the pandemic can be very stressful, but you really need to quit smoking now. If not for you, then at least for the people around you - your family and friends.
