What Effect Does Secondhand Smoking Have on Children? | Alcoban

Smoking is one of the worst addictions there is. The reason is that it does not just affect the smoker but rather the innocent people around them as well. The dangerous effects of secondhand smoking can be clearly seen in children whose parents smoke around them. These children suffer many health problems and have a significantly smaller lifespan.

Children who have been exposed to smoking by their parents have several negative health problems. The walls of their blood vessels start thickening which increases their risk of heart attack and stroke in the future. This information has been published in European journals related to the heart.

'Passive smoking' i.e. secondhand smoking causes long-term damage to the blood arteries of children. Apart from this, their blood vessels also develop prematurely.

The researchers found in their study that the health of more than 2,000 children between the ages of three and 18 years of age, both of whose parents smoked cigarettes, were at risk. Experts also believe that the danger caused by 'passive smoking' i.e. second hand smoking cannot be estimated.

In a research conducted in Finland and Australia, it has come to the fore that there is a bad effect on the health of children growing up in a smoke-filled house. However, apart from the harm caused to the body by smoking, there are also other psychological damages.

An ultrasound of a child whose parents are both smokers showed some changes in the walls of the main artery leading from the neck to the head. The investigators say that although these changes in artery walls are minor, these changes become significant and effective when the child becomes an adult after 20 years.

A research conducted has clearly shown that a child exposed to passive smoking during childhood has a direct and irreversible damage to the structure of the arteries. The researcher said, “Parents, even those who are just about to become a mother or father, should stop smoking cigarettes without delay. This will not only have a positive effect on their own health, but also their children’s future health." Despite the inclusion of cigarette smokers in this study, the research results did not change.

If only one adult in the household smokes cigarettes and he smokes cigarettes outside the home, then the effect of passive smoking is reduced. But we do not have the data to prove this, It can only be speculated about. Whatever the circumstances, the researchers say that children should be protected against secondhand smoke.

There is a bad effect on the health of children growing up in a smoke-filled house.

The health damage caused by passive smoking is well-known. But this study goes a step further by showing that it causes direct and irreversible damage to children's arteries which increases the risk of developing heart-related diseases in children in the future.
