Addiction is a psychological need to do, take or use something to the point of physical and mental harm. People with addiction have an intense desire to use a certain substance, such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their life. Addicts become dependent on alcohol or drugs in order to function in their daily life. However, there is a difference between addiction and misuse. Not everybody that consumes substances have addiction. A person who drinks alcohol heavily on a night out may still have the ability to cease intake on other days. Misuse does not qualify as an addiction until the person feels the need to consume alcohol both heavily and regularly.
